Identifying the right one

The measurement that matters is the centerline, and this assembly is 7-1/2 inches. The shaft also carries Piston Assembly 27-3241 molded into it, which is the quickest way to confirm a match against the part already in the valve. The listing is sold as 273241Z and the source material also shows the number as 273241; both point at this same assembly.

Why it wears

The piston rod is the moving part of a push pull valve, stroking up and down every time the valve is operated. Over years the shaft scores and the seals ride on a rougher surface, and the valve gets stiff or starts passing water when it should be closed. Replacing the rod assembly is the usual fix.
